Pass It On, Part 7: Africa

This week we will conclude our journey by taking a look at the spread of the Battlefield315 videos across Africa.

Africa is by far the least developed continent and supplies only a small share of the total traffic. Some third world countries provide more hits than all the countries of Africa combined. South Africa is the most active, accounting for almost half of the continent's hits. Egypt and Morocco are the other countries that stand out: Together with South Africa, they provide about three-quarters of Africa's traffic....

Most continents have a few countries about which YouTube cannot even report any data; Africa has more than half a dozen, including Zimbabwe, Chad, Sierra Leone and Swaziland, a country where the average life expectancy is just shy of 40 years.

Interestingly, nearly every country for which YouTube provides data has been reached: Only Madagascar, Guinea and Lesotho (despite being completely surrounded by South Africa) have not.

The remaining countries have often supplied just a few hits. Surprisingly often, there has been exactly one hit: from Gabon, Niger, Zambia, Somalia, Mauritania, Gambia, Equitorial Guinea, and Burkina Faso (formerly known as Upper Volta).

Libya has provided a few hits, but has been silent since the revolution began. Of the sub-Saharan countries other than South Africa, Kenya has been the most active.

Pass It On, Part 6: The Pacific

This week we will take a look at the spread of the Battlefield315 videos across the islands of the Pacific.

Though its economy is still developing, Indonesia has supplied a fair amount of traffic due to its large population--the fourth-largest in the world. Japan is the only other country in the Pacific with a population over a hundred million; coupled with its advanced economy, it easily boasts the greatest number of hits (besides Australia). The big surprise of the Pacific is the high degree of traffic from the Philippines....

The Philippines consistently supplies almost as many hits as Japan. Though formerly an American territory, its high degree of activity is simply an unexplained outlier, not unlike Thailand's.

Moving farther south than the YouTube's "Asia" map allows, Australia is the giant. Its population is actually less than one-fifth of Japan's, but its traffic is greater than the rest of the Pacific combined with the Asian mainland. Partly this is because Australia is an English-speaking country (only the United States, Canada and the UK have more hits). Some of the traffic is also due to the dispersal of the "Global Warming Panic explained" video by a popular Australian blogger in the wake of the Queensland Floods disaster in December-January. New Zealand supplies traffic at about the same rate per capita, but its population is much smaller than Australia's.

YouTube is able to report activity from many of the island groups of the Pacific, and the Battlefield315 videos have reached nearly all of them. Some, like Vanuatu and the Cook Islands, are familiar to Americans as exotic backdrops for the TV series "Survivor." They have yet to reach Samoa, however.

Pass It On, Part 5: Asian Mainland

This week we will take a look at the spread of the Battlefield315 videos across mainland Asia.

There is a surprisingly dense area of traffic around the Malay Peninsula: Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore together the supply the majority of hits from the Asian mainland. This is despite the presence of the world's two population giants, India and China. India supplies a fair amount of traffic, but not in proportion to its size. India lacks development; in China, the government is the root of the problem...

The communist government of China famously instituted the "Great Firewall of China" to prevent its people from gaining access to the ideas of the outside world. This means a total block on YouTube--almost. YouTube reports a couple dozen hits from China. The "Firewall" is almost impenetrable, but not quite. It's unclear how the few hits made it through. Perhaps some higher-level members of the government are permitted access to YouTube. The same seems to be true of Iran, where a few hits have trickled in.

As a contrast, the videos on this site received more hits from Afghanistan and almost as many from Mongolia as from China. There is an exception, however: Hong Kong, a special administrative district of China, has no such internet restrictions, and thousands of hits have poured in from there.

Of the remaining communist states: Vietnam does not appear to have any restrictions on access to YouTube. Laos has supplied a few hits, but the small number may be attributed to lack of economic development. There is no data available from North Korea.

Turkmenistan and Myanmar (Burma) are the only other countries about which YouTube has no data. There have been no hits from Uzbekistan or Bhutan, but the remaining countries of the Asian mainland have been reached.

Pass It On, Part 4: Middle East

This week we will take a look at the spread of the Battlefield315 videos across the Middle East.

Note that YouTube's definition of the Middle East does not include anything in Africa or east of Iraq. Within the defined area, two countries stand above the rest: Israel, which supplies about a third of the total traffic, and Turkey, which accounts for about one-sixth. YouTube is able to supply data for all of the countries except for the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (also known as South Yemen). There is also no data from an area called simply the "Neutral Zone," which presumably refers to the undefined southern border of Saudi Arabia...

As to the rest of the countries, all of them have been reached by the Battlefield315 videos. Israel's heavy traffic is facilitated by its advanced economy and English-speaking population.Turkey benefits from its large population: Turkey is far more populous than any other country in this area and about ten times the size of Israel.

Wide disparities may be seen in the level of traffic relative to population size. Yemen and Syria, despite their size, provide almost no hits. Small, rich countries like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates fare much better, as does Georgia.

Pass It On, Part 3: Europe

This week we will take a look at the spread of the Battlefield315 videos across Europe.

As the videos are in English, it comes as no surprise that the United Kingdom supplies the most traffic in Europe. Globally, the UK is only behind the United States and Canada. Ireland is also an English-speaking country, but it does not provide a disproportionate number of hits. But Germany, Sweden, and (oddly) Romania do...

The real effect of the English language is seen in the relatively heavy traffic from small British territories such as the Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man.

Most of Europe is comprised of "First World Countries," but there is one country from which YouTube cannot report data: Serbia and Montenegro (not to be confused with Serbia). YouTube is also unable to report from the microstates of Monaco and Vatican City, which has a population of less than a thousand.

Battlefield315 has reached all of the European countries except for the microstates of Liechtenstein and Andorra, though it has received a hit from the microstate of San Marino.

Pass It On, Part 2: Latin America

This week we will take a look at the spread of the Battlefield315 videos across South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

YouTube is unable to collect data on French Guiana or the Falkland Islands, but the rest of South America has been reached. The majority of traffic comes from Brazil, by far the most populous country. Argentina is slightly smaller than Colombia, but provides a disproportionate number of hits...

The least traffic comes from Guyana, the country made famous by the Jonestown Kool-Aid® incident.

Moving northward to Central America, the eight mainland countries (counting Mexico) have all been reached. Mexico dwarfs the rest in both population and video traffic.

The videos have been passed along to most of the islands of the Caribbean, but not all. Aside from Puerto Rico, Jamaica has had the most hits. Traffic has been detected on familiar vacation spots (e.g. Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Caymans), perhaps from Americans on holiday. The videos have also received hits from less well-known islands, such as Saint Kitts & Nevis (independent from the UK as of 1983) and Anguilla (population 14,000).

A handful of islands have yet to be reached, including Grenada (the location of "Operation Urgent Fury" in 1983) and Montserrat (population 5,000).

Despite being the Caribbean's most populous country, Cuba has also received zero hits--at least on official Cuban IP addresses. This website has been reached from Cuba, but the videos themselves have not. The Castro regime has apparently closed off access to YouTube, but Battlefield315.com has not been blocked (yet). As we will see in future updates, other Communist countries have not been as successful in blocking access. Once Cuba is free, its numbers should lead in the Caribbean.

Hundreds of thousands of people have shared the videos on this site and spread them across the internet. The geographic data provided by YouTube and Blogspot enable us to gain some insight. In this series, we will examine how the Battlefield315 videos have been passed along throughout the world.

This week we will look at the United States.

All fifty states and the District of Columbia have been reached. The states with the largest concentration of hits are shown in dark green. Not surprisingly, the most populous states (California, Texas, New York, Florida) supply the most hits.

Colorado provides a disproportionate amount of traffic, as do Washington, Virginia and Arizona...

Activity has also been detected in United States territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands...and one hit from American Samoa.
